Workers are joining together to pass a bill to prevent workers from being displaced when large chain workplaces close!

UFCW 770 member Omar joined workers from Starbucks, Amazon, Walmart, and other big box retail corporations, to advocate for SB 627- The Displaced Worker Transfer Rights Act co-sponsored by labor champions Senators Lola Smallwood-Cuevas,Maria Elena Durazo, and Miguel Santiago, as well as Assemblymember Ash Kalra.

In the middle of the pandemic, Omar and other 250 workers were displaced when seven Kroger stores, including Omar’s Food 4 Less in LA shut down. The time they lost working strained their finances and mental health as they struggled to make ends meet.

SB 627 would protect workers from retaliatory store closings by requiring employers with 100 stores locations nationwide to offer impacted workers opportunities at nearby stores when jobs become available.
