Union Representative Restructuring
To strengthen our union, UFCW 770 is implementing changes to the union representative system for retail food and drug stores. This new structure will divide responsibilities between two specialized roles: the Contract Enforcer, who will handle grievances and contract compliance, and the Leadership Organizer, who will focus on developing worker leaders and increasing member engagement.
By making this change, we aim to address workplace issues more effectively while also empowering members to take a more active role in the union. This FAQ outlines what these changes mean for you and how to navigate the new system.
-
We’re making this change to better support our members in building power. By having one rep focus on contract enforcement and grievances while another focuses on leadership development, we can have a stronger presence in your stores and be more effective in both areas.
-
Contract Enforcer: Handles grievances, ensures contract compliance, helps members navigate workplace issues, provides contract training so members are better able to identify and combat contract violations and identifies issues that can be addressed through collective action
Leadership Organizer: Identifies and supports worker leaders, encourages member involvement, supports member actions and helps build a stronger union presence in each store.
-
This system ensures that contract violations are addressed more quickly and effectively while also strengthening our union by developing workplace leaders. It creates a more engaged and empowered membership.
-
Not necessarily. Your contract-related concerns will be handled by the Contract Enforcer, while issues related to leadership and organizing will go to the Leadership Organizer.
-
In the event of an emergency or store incident you can call our Contract Compliance Hotline at (213) 487-7070 Ext. 6505. You can also ask your union steward or check your store’s union bulletin board for updates.
-
You can speak with either rep, and they will direct you to the right person to assist you. Our goal is to make sure you get the help and support you need.
-
No, the process remains the same, but having a dedicated Contract Enforcement Rep means grievances may be handled more efficiently.
-
The Leadership Organizer will work closely with members to identify potential leaders, provide training, and create opportunities for workers to take an active role in strengthening the union.
